Due to New York City’s grocery delivery laws, the shopping and delivery experience is unique to shoppers in the New York City metro. To review your Notice of Worker Rights and Fire Safety Materials, click here.
Order Offering
- Orders in all metros are offered to shoppers based on several factors, including but not limited to their preferred connections, shopper stats, location, and the delivery windows and zones they've selected on the Schedule screen in the app.
- You can receive offers for orders while offline; however, to claim an offer or browse Open metro, first tap Go online on the Available orders page in the shopper app. Once you receive an offer, including those from preferred members, you may have the ability to go online for a short period of time.
- If you aren’t already on the schedule, you’ll be automatically added to it for the current and following delivery windows when you go online.
- For example, if you go online at 2:30 p.m., you’ll be added to the schedule for the 2-3 p.m. and 3-4 p.m. delivery windows.
- In order to balance the number of shoppers online with the amount of work available, there may be limitations on how many shoppers can be online at once. If you attempt to go online and are not able to do so, you can try again at a later time. Shoppers can only be online for a limited amount of time, and may be moved to offline status by Shipt.
- In NYC, a shopper’s distance from the store is a primary factor in the orders they see and can claim, meaning you may not be offered or able to claim offers if you are too far away from a store location. You may also see more orders closer to their delivery windows rather than further in advance.
Earnings
To meet the New York City Council’s requirements regarding grocery delivery workers and minimum pay, Shipt has transitioned to the law’s "Standard Method" of compensation.
The Standard Method provides a $22.13 per hour base rate* for a shopper’s active trip time. Trip time is the period of time between when a shopper accepts an order – by heading to the store – until they complete the order at the delivery location, as outlined by the law.
*Note: This amount is updated annually to adjust for inflation.
- To help ensure you’re paid accurately for your time, you must always allow location data collection and always complete the Swipe to head to store action on the Order Details screen when you’re ready to begin your route to the store.
- When you head to the store, this starts your trip time, and you should begin making continuous progress with your order. Trip time stops when you've completed your order.
- If you stop making progress on the order for things like stops, rests, personal errands, or other breaks you may take, you can pause your trip time by swiping Pause time at the bottom of the order details screen. Swipe Resume time when you’re ready to continue completing the order.
- Remember that purposely manipulating or falsifying the time taken and distance driven to complete an order is a violation of the App Access Guidelines which may lead to deactivation and other actions taken by Shipt. For more information on deactivation, click here.

Shopper pay will be reviewed weekly to see if each shopper's pay meets the required minimum earnings.
- If your total pay is less than the $22.13 per hour minimum requirement for active trip time, you’ll receive a pay adjustment at the end of the week. This additional payment will be reflected as “NYC minimum pay adjustment” on your weekly pay statement. Pay adjustments will be paid out with your regular weekly pay on Fridays for work completed the previous Monday-Sunday.
- If your total pay is equal to or greater than the $22.13 per hour minimum requirement for active trip time, you will not receive a pay adjustment.

NYC Supplemental Pay
In addition to standard order pay, some shoppers may occasionally receive supplemental pay. If awarded, this will be paid out on Fridays for orders completed the previous Monday-Sunday.
Shipt's total combined payments to all shoppers within the pay period must meet or exceed the minimum of $22.13 per hour.*
*This amount is updated annually to adjust for inflation.
- If Shipt does not meet this minimum through traditional order pay, supplemental pay will be issued to eligible shoppers in the metro. If you qualify, you will see this reflected as “NYC Supplemental Pay” in your Payment history.
- If Shipt meets or exceeds this minimum through traditional order pay, supplemental pay will not be issued. This means there may be some weeks where previously eligible shoppers will not receive the supplemental pay as no payout is required.

FAQ
When will I be paid?
- All shoppers with Shipt are paid Friday for work completed the previous Monday-Sunday. If you’re eligible for a pay adjustment based on your trip time, you’ll see this reflected as "NYC Minimum Pay Adjustment" on your pay statement.
Can I still use the schedule and/or claim orders from Open metro in addition to the “Go online” feature?
- Yes, in order to receive offers, you’ll still place yourself on the schedule for the days and delivery windows that you’re interested in delivering, and orders will be available to claim in Open metro.
- To claim your offers or browse Open metro, you’ll first need to tap “Go online.”
- If you aren’t already on the schedule, you’ll be automatically added to it for the current and following delivery windows when you go online. For example, if you go online at 2:30 p.m., you’ll be added to the schedule for the 2-3 p.m. and 3-4 p.m. delivery windows.
How many shoppers can be “online” at once?
- In order to balance the number of shoppers online with the amount of work available, there may be limitations on how many shoppers can be online at once. During periods of low order volume, for example, when not as many shoppers are needed to meet the demand, access to the platform may be limited. Similarly, during periods of high order volume, a larger number of shoppers may be needed online.
- If a shopper attempts to “Go online” and is not able to, they can try again later.
Can I receive offers while offline?
- Yes, shoppers can receive offers for orders while offline; however, to claim an offer or browse Open metro, shoppers must first go online. In order to balance the number of shoppers online with the amount of work available, there may be limitations on how many shoppers can be online at once. Shoppers who attempt to go online but are unable to do so can try again at a later time.
How long can a shopper be online?
- The amount of time that shoppers can be online may vary, and is something we will continue to assess. We have introduced these changes now to give us an opportunity to test and learn while continuing to provide an optimal experience for shoppers when the mandatory requirements take effect this summer.
Why did I receive an “Unable to claim order” error?
- To help ensure efficient and on-time deliveries, shoppers will not be able to claim orders if they’re too far away from the store location. Remember that you can update your available zones on the schedule page in the app to make sure you only receive offers that are in proximity to your location.
How do I indicate when I’m beginning to drive directly to the store?
- When you're ready to head directly to the store to complete an order, place your finger on the arrow next to Swipe and head to store, and then swipe toward the right side of the screen until the action has been submitted successfully.
- If the Swipe and head to store action is disabled, this means it is too early to head to the store either because it is not open or the delivery window is too far away. The action will be enabled within plenty of time for you to head to the store to start the order and deliver on time.
- If the suggested order start time is approaching and you have not completed the Swipe to head to store action or communicated with the customer, you’ll receive a notification in the app and may be released from the order.
Is there somewhere I can share feedback with NYC lawmakers about these changes?
- If you are concerned about how these City mandates are impacting your experience, you can voice your concerns to New York City elected officials here.
Why can't I opt out of sharing my location?
- As a platform enabling deliveries from one place to another, accurate location data is important to both providing service and supporting shoppers. That’s why we’ve long had the need to collect specific location data outlined in the Shopper Privacy Policy that is included in the Shipt Shopper Agreement.
- Sharing location helps ensure pay is consistent with NYC delivery mandates and helps make accurate information available for all shops. If you do not enable location data collection, you’ll be unable to complete work on the Shipt platform.
- Your location data is stored securely and is only used for operational purposes.
How do I qualify for the NYC supplemental pay?
- Active NYC shoppers who maintain high shopper stats may be eligible for supplemental pay, if applicable, on Fridays for work completed the previous Monday-Sunday.
- Staying active in the metro by completing orders and aiming to keep your shopper stats high by following the Standards of Service outlined in Shipt’s App Access Guidelines including but not limited to delivering orders on time, not releasing orders less than an hour before the delivery window, and providing a stellar customer experience will increase your chances of receiving the NYC supplemental pay, if applicable, for the previous week.
Why didn’t I receive supplemental pay this week?
- If Shipt meets or exceeds the minimum required payment to NYC shoppers through traditional order pay, supplemental pay will not be issued. This means there may be some weeks where previously eligible shoppers will not receive the supplemental pay as no payout is required.
- In addition, we will continue to assess the criteria for shopper eligibility for supplemental pay. This means that shoppers who qualify one week might not qualify the next week.
